What are amino acids and why we need them
Essential amino acids
Nine of the amino acids are essential because they cannot be created by the body from other compounds. This is why they must be taken from food.
Nonessential amino acids
Thirteen of the amino acids are nonessential. This means they can be synthesized by the body in sufficient quantity to satisfy dietary needs. Some of the nonessential amino acids are conditionally essential.
Conditionally essential amino acids
Others amino acids may be conditionally essential for special reasons like age or medical condition.
